In Illustrator, using the pen tool, draw a symbol for a given animal. The type of animal will be delivered to you at random. This is an exercise of abstraction in which you will have to consider form and counterform. Choose judiciously what to keep and what to let go. How can the animal be recognized as such, what are its characteristics? Head or full body? Flat silhouette or adding depth? Body structure? You have two weeks to make the best of it, and best is to start with a lot of hand-drawn sketches in a sketchbook.
PART II (1 week)
You will be given a piece of paper with an emotion written on it. Redraw your animal symbol entirely, this time giving it an emotion. The animal’s emotion should be recognizable from its style, posture, character, etc.
Format
20cm, printed on quality paper, minimum 200gsm. The symbol shoud be placed in the center of the square, itself in a square not exceeding 10cm.
Assignment 2
You will be given a piece of vintage advertising. Redraw, at a larger scale, the principal arrangement of letters that can be found in the advertising piece. The use of the computer is forbidden.
Format
A3, horizontal (landscape orientation)
Assignment 3
Continue the same piece of advertising by completing everything around the piece of handlettering you have already delivered. The goal is to replicate the same result, effect and craft. It is an identital copy besides one element – a wildcard – that will be handed to you by me. You will have to bring the element of the wildcard into the piece. Adobe Suite cannot be used for tracing / pre-coloring. It can be used for post-production and layout-making.
Format
Pre-define a format suitable for the piece and stick to it. Accepting inkjet printouts.
